Flowers for the Country Look

Good afternoon to you, I hope you are having a lovely Saturday. I'm relaxing writing this whilst my other half is engrossed in the six nations rugby! We have had a rare Saturday off today and we have spent the morning scouring local antique shops and reclamation yards. I think we have bought some stunning new (well, new to us) props for the country look wedding. We have bought a beautiful old mangle, I know it doesn't sound very wedding-y but it is so pretty and will look fabulous with jars of flowers lined up along the top and a basket of flowers, or a basket for cards, placed on the shelf beneath. Watch this space for pictures!

The Country Look is very in at the moment and I have to admit it is one of my favourites. I love the gentle flowers, lovely roses and gyp in old tea services, like the ones below which I did last week for a Wedding Fair in Bradford. This look works well in vintage china, say tea pot, milk jug and sugar or even a cup and saucer. Pretty small flowers are really well suited to the smaller containers and the gyp (the white fluffy flower) sets them off beautifully. Stood on a hessian table runner they look perfect.

Birdcages also work well for the country look.

This is one from a previous set up, cream roses, soft ferns and Achemelia with 5 candles.
This one is a bit more formal but still fits the country look beautifully.

This one is from a wedding last year. The bride, Samantha, bought her own birdcages, each with 6 glass cups inside, meant for holding tea lights. Samantha wanted the candle cups filled with flowers to match her bouquet and top table flowers. Afterwards she gave the birdcages as momentos to those most special to her. This was a lovely wedding, Samantha is pictured on my website with her husband, the couple have either blossom or rose petals floating in front of them and she has a beautiful smile.

Jugs are great for the country wedding, though not always for table centrepieces. One of the main considerations for table flowers is can your guests see the top table? When seated your guests will want to see each other and you, so table flowers have to be either low enough for them to see over, or tall enough for them to see under. Having said that, jugs are brilliant for placing on a cake or guest book table, and for the end of a bar where you just want a bit of something to carry your look through.

The jug above has spray roses with cabbages, tree ivy and twisted willow. Tree ivy is great for the pretty clusters of berries, the texture adds depth and interest to this arrangement. The jug below is a more relaxed display of faux spray roses and willow, standing next to a candles, one in a vintage plant pot, the other in bronzed glass.

One of the items we bought this morning is a vintage step ladder. This is going to look fantastic as an entrance display. The steps are stripped pine and with a jug of flowers on the top step and LOVE in individual letters  going down the steps, with pretty jars of flowers at the side of each letter, they are going to be lovely. I can't wait to get some photos!

Another simple idea for table flowers at a country wedding are old fashioned school milk bottles and groups of jam jars. Tied with string, ribbon or lace both these containers look pretty filled with flowers. The two pictures below are from a vintage style wedding we did at Lincoln. The bride wanted an Alice in Wonderland theme and we supplied vintage china and bunting for her afternoon tea party. The top table had jam jars filled with mixed summer blooms with Mr & Mrs letters.

As well as the jam jars the bride tied lace around small milk bottles filled with Muscari.

The lace matched our hessian and lace chair sashes. The extra bits, like the table confetti cut in heart shapes from old books, just finish the look.

We supplied vintage china for this wedding, which looked lovely and suits the country look. The bride made jars of jam as her favours and we attached EAT ME labels to them, with DRINK ME labels on the tea cups!

The country look needs to be finished to be right. Think about your finishing bits and bobs, what your arrangement is going to stand on, is a white cloth or mirror plate the look you want? The jug of flowers above stands on a Hessian cloth whilst one of my brides this year is having old Dowe Egbert's coffee jars tied with lace and filled with flowers standing on a slice of tree trunk. This one will look stunning and I will post photos after the event (July)

Other containers that work well for the Country look are metal and enamel buckets. Baskets and simple containers also work, even well washed tin cans look good with a bit of hessian and lace wrapped around and filled with country flowers.

The flowers above were for a church hall lunch where all the guests brought a plate. This was a big wedding we did in London. The church ceremony was quite early, I think 11am, and the guests went into the adjoining Church Hall for tea and sandwiches afterwards. The formal Wedding Breakfast was in a big hotel later in the afternoon but the bride and groom wanted to give their guests a bit of a sit down and relax inbetween. This took all of my vintage china, 35 three tiered cakes stands, loads  of sandwich and serving plates and 300 cups, saucers and tea plates. The flowers were in little squat zinc buckets. It may have been a stop gap but it was lovely, the atmosphere was really relaxed and every single guest brought either sandwiches or cakes.

Well thats it for this post, it's Sunday now and my beloved is in the garage making me some big LOVE letters for my vintage steps. I can't wait to see what they look like done! And I have the mangle to dress for some photographs. I hope it has been worth reading,
